Texas Farm Bureau Predicts Bright Future For Ethanol Fuel

CLIFTON-----The president of the Bosque County Farm Bureau said that Texas farmers could be at the center of a major effort toward more American energy independence.

"Texas is one of the leading states in production of grain and other stocks that could be made into fuel ethanol," said Alan Day, president of the Bosque County Farm Bureau. "Yet, there are only a handful of places in the Lone Star State where a motorist can buy ethanol."

That could be changing, as construction of an ethanol plant in Dumas is underway, and two other companies have plans to build similar facilities in the Texas Panhandle. The Dumas plant will have a 30 million gallon per year capacity.

In 2001, when Congress began debating the nation's energy policy, annual ethanol output was about 1.5 billion gallons. By the end of this year, the nation will produce nearly four billion gallons, much of it from farmer-owned plants.

Wholesale ethanol prices have dropped below wholesale gasoline prices. The Consumer Federation of America announced in May that oil companies would blend more ethanol with gasoline, Americans per gallon.

America's farmers are ready to help the nation move toward energy independence, and Texans need to; have access to ethanol, " Day said.
